Devices can be plugged into different outlets with the help of plug adapters. 3-prong plugs are commonly adapted for use in older two-prong outlets, bypassing the grounding plug entirely. By using the wiring, excess electricity can be carried into the socket and the ground through the grounding prong on modern three-prong plugs. In the absence of that prong, electricity will flow through the nearest conductor, such as water, other wires, fabrics, or even people or pets.

International Plug Adapters

Using a travel adapter, you can plug a device from one country into a wall outlet from another. They do not convert electricity, however. European appliances cannot be plugged into foreign outlets without an international plug adapter.

There are some plug types that are used across a broader region. Typically, Europe plug types are type C, while USA plug types are type A. Asia, however, uses different plug types across different countries. For your safety and preparedness, it's a good idea to understand which plug type is used in your destination region.

Universal Travel Adapters

An all-in-one travel adapter/converter is a device that meets all your travel needs. You can use it as both a travel charger and an adapter. Most people prefer this option because they will be prepared for any electrical or charging needs they may have.

With universal power adapters, you can power a wide variety of devices in almost any environment. Many types of household appliances can be adapted for use with handheld devices, laptops, and even laptop chargers. Traveling to another country usually necessitates a universal power adapter because the type of electrical outlets and the power supply must be converted for the device to function properly.

NEMA Plug Adapter

The NEMA sets quality standards for electrical plugs and receptacles in the United States. Among the most common connectors are the NEMA 1-15P and NEMA 5-15P, which have rubber bodies and steel or brass prongs coated with zinc, tin, or nickel. There are also connectors with differently positioned prongs and higher voltages.

Connectors are categorized into locking and non-locking, with locking connectors having curved prongs that can be twisted after insertion to secure them. A non-locking connector has a straight blade and is used for computers, appliances, and other everyday items such as hairdryers and irons. Having a locking plug or receptacle prevents the connector from being accidentally disconnected or dislodged.

Frequently Asked Question

Around the world, there are 15 different types of sockets, (of which 12 are the most common types) and they may all require different adapter plugs. It is useful to learn the most frequently used types of plug adapters before purchasing them.

When you travel abroad, you may need a power adapter to plug your device into a different type of plug than the one you use at home. They simply allow the plug of your device to fit into the foreign outlet. They do not convert electricity or alter the amp input. To save taking multiple adapters, we also recommend taking one power strip to plug into the adapter so that multiple devices can be supplied power at any time.

Your gadgets will require chargers, so make sure you bring them. Be sure to pack a power bank and any electronics with lithium batteries in your carry-on luggage. Check that you have the right country plug adapter for your holiday destination - and make sure you pack it!
