UL Approvals for EVE and EVJE Wire

With more and more electric vehicles on the road, the usage of safe, environmentally-minded, and reliable power cords has become increasingly important. Along with more regulations within the EV industry, most manufacturers have found that previous EV, UL approved, PVC and rubber products, often times do not meet their quality standards. Also, these EV products do not have the optimum physical properties of flexibility or resistance to oils, chemicals and UV rays.
Most OEM’s outside of the EV industry primarily use PVC (polyvinyl chloride) as the chief ingredient to meet their specifications. PVC has proven to be strong and easy to mold, but less flexible and fire-retardant as well as chemical, oil and UV resistant. Using PVC in the manufacturing process has always been a key factor in producing power cords. To produce power cords for electric vehicles with UL approvals though, the use of thermoplastic materials is often used to meet the quick demand for a suitable power cord.
While EVT (Electric Vehicle Cable Extra Hard Usage 600V, Thermoplastic) and EVJT (Electric Vehicle Cable Hard Usage 300V, Thermoplastic) power cords have shown that they can sufficiently satisfy the quality requirements needed in the EV marketplace; EV manufacturers have sought an even more flexible material that also endures a variety of harsh environmental conditions.
Enter the EVE and EVJE UL standards, created specifically to fulfill the EV industry’s needs. How this may differ from the previous versions of UL approved EV cords lies solely in the material used in the jacket of the cord. EVE and EVJE utilize a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) which greatly broadens the cord’s characteristics while maintaining the benefits of thermoplastics and rubber materials. TPE material is unique in that it resembles the properties of rubber, making it an extremely flexible material as well as weather resistant, tear and scuff resistant; all the while, still being a thermoplastic. This becomes important in the manufacturing process, since the machines used to produce cords mainly utilize injection molding. By applying the thermoplastic elastomers as the main material of the power cord wire jacket, EV manufacturers have found the optimal combination of characteristics to fulfill their quality standards as well as desired physical properties.
