North America and other countries complying with the standards set by the US National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) use NEMA power cords to connect AC mains electricity to power sockets. A variety of NEMA power cord types are available with a variety of NEMA connectors. A NEMA connector is either a power plug or a receptacle or outlet that supports the NEMA plug.

Among the products we offer are NEMA 1-15 Power Cords, NEMA 5-15 to IEC 320 C13 Power Cords, NEMA 5-15 to IEC 320 C15 Power Cords, NEMA 5-15 to IEC 320 C19 Power Cords, NEMA 5-15 to IEC 320 C5 Power Cords, NEMA 5-15P to NEMA 5-15R Power Cords Extensions, NEMA 5-20 Power Cords, NEMA 6-15 Power Cords, NEMA 6-20 Power Cords, NEMA 5-20 Power Cords, NEMA 6-15 Power Cords, NEMA 6-20 Power Cords, NEMA L5-15 Locking Power Cords and Locking Power Cords are among the many available.

NEMA Plug and US Connector

Different NEMA connectors form different types of NEMA power cords. NEMA connectors can either be straight-bladed or locking. Most consumer electronics have straight blades, and the metal conductive blades are called "prongs" informally (3-prong power cord, for example). Except for grounding connectors, NEMA straight-blade connectors have blades that are flat or folded. By pulling back on the plug body, one can detach NEMA power plugs from outlets or receptacles. In industrial applications, locking connectors have curved blades that allow the plug to be twisted and locked into the outlet. These locking mechanisms provide additional safety and security in environments where power needs to be kept on for long periods of time. The plug will remain in the outlet with a locking connector until the user unlocks it. This prevents accidental disconnection of the power source.

For North American markets, SIGNAL+POWER offers NEMA 1-15, 5-15, 5-20, 6-15, 6-20, and angled 5-15 power cords and cord sets. UL and CSA-certified hospital-grade products are also offered, as well as green-dot-certified North American products.

NEMA Plug Adaptors

A NEMA 5-15-P is a three-prong grounded plug that plugs into a standard 110 VAC wall outlet. A NEMA standard is set by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, an industry group. There are two flat parallel blades on the connector, with a round ground pin above and between them. A 5-15-R is the female mating outlet for the 5-15-P (R stands for "receptacle").

Plugs that fit into 110 VAC wall outlets are commonly referred to as NEMA 1-15-Ps. The plug has two flat blades, just like the NEMA 5-15 plug, but there is no ground pin. A 1-15-R (receptacle) is the female mating outlet for the 1-15-P. This plug has a slightly wider blade on one end than the other on most current versions.

Using electronic devices while traveling requires a travel adapter. In countries with different voltages or plug types than those you live in, you will need an adapter. Different parts of the world have different shapes of power outlets, so you will need an adapter to convert the shape of your home plug to the shape of the outlet in the region of the world where you will be traveling.

Frequently Asked Question

In North America, power cords are commonly governed by the NEMA and IEC standards. A NEMA connector is found on the side of the power cord that plugs into an AC wall outlet. Devices such as computers and televisions use IEC connectors. It is generally accepted that NEMA and IEC are compatible with each other.

NEMA plugs by itself may or may not be part of a waterproof electrical system. There are a number of NEMA receptacles and plugs that can be waterproof. For instance, a NEMA receptacle with weatherproof flanged inlet can create a seal with a properly rated and matching plug. These watertight devices are used in harsh environments such as water treatment, agriculture, food and beverage processing, outdoor entertainment, and factories.

It depends on the rating of the NEMA cord. NEMA cords can be used both indoors and outdoors if it has a rating of W-A or W. W-A and W are rated for outdoor use as they are weather and water resistant.
